What are non-12-Step drug and alcohol treatment programs in Florida?

Some of the alcohol and drug treatment programs In Florida fall into two major categories: 12-step and non-12-step programs. Non-12-step drug rehab programs do not utilize the 12-steps or any of its methodology. When 12-step programs were developed, they focused on finding a road to recovery and a road back to God. Each step taken is designed to help the individual break the cycle of their addiction while at the same time finding their way back to God or their higher power of choice. Those who have guiding religious beliefs find these steps comforting; however, those who do not share those beliefs may find those steps uncomfortable. Additionally, non-12-step programs have a higher sense of self-empowerment due to their avoidance of labeling addiction as a disease.

For some people struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, a 12-step program may not be the right fit for them as they work towards their sobriety. If an individual does not have a reliance on religion, 12-step programs can feel like more of an attack than a helpful environment. A 12-step alternative or a non-12-step program provides alternative treatments and methods to recovery that are welcoming and inclusive. Non-12-step programs provide therapies and holistic ideologies to help those struggling with addiction reach sobriety. A holistic approach means looking at each individual as a whole person instead of just focusing on their addiction.

Secular rehab programs empower their members by teaching them how to create healthy, sober lives. This approach is based on cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT. Cognitive-behavioral therapy works to modify the behaviors and thought patterns that create problems for those struggling with drug addiction. Instead of encouraging members to surrender their will to a higher power, these programs give members coping strategies and skills to overcome their addictions and avoid relapses. This technique also looks to teach individuals distraction and relaxation techniques and encourages pleasant sober activities, and strengthens interpersonal relationships, all aiming to prevent future relapses.
